How to Choose the Right Tech Stack for Your Next Web Project

The Stack Selection Problem

Every new project starts with the same debate: what technologies should we use? Too often, the decision is driven by developer preference, hype cycles, or "what we used last time"—rather than a structured evaluation of project requirements.

The Decision Framework

1. Define Your Non-Negotiables

Before evaluating any technology, list the requirements that are not open for debate:

  • SEO: Does the site need to be indexed by search engines? You need server-side rendering (SSR) or static generation (SSG).
  • Internationalisation: Will the site serve multiple languages? Choose a framework with mature i18n support.
  • Performance Budget: What are your Core Web Vitals targets? This constrains your JavaScript bundle size and rendering strategy.
  • Team Expertise: What does your team already know? The best framework is the one your team can ship with.
  • Scale: How many pages, how much traffic, how many concurrent users?

2. Frontend Framework

  • Next.js (React): Best for content-heavy, SEO-critical websites with dynamic data. Excellent ecosystem, mature tooling.
  • Nuxt (Vue): Strong alternative to Next.js for Vue-oriented teams. Similar SSR/SSG capabilities.
  • SvelteKit (Svelte): Smaller bundle sizes and simpler mental model. Growing ecosystem.
  • Astro: Best for content-first sites where interactivity is minimal. Ships zero JavaScript by default.

3. Backend / API Layer

  • Node.js / Express / Fastify: Natural fit for JavaScript-heavy teams. Rich middleware ecosystem.
  • Go: Excellent for high-concurrency microservices. Smaller dependency surface.
  • Python / FastAPI: Ideal when ML/AI integration is a core requirement.
  • Serverless Functions: Consider for event-driven, low-traffic APIs. Watch cold-start latency.

4. Database

  • PostgreSQL: Default choice for relational data. Robust, extensible, excellent tooling.
  • MongoDB: Strong for document-oriented data with schema flexibility. Good for content platforms.
  • Redis: Caching layer and real-time data structures. Complement, not replace, your primary database.

5. Infrastructure

  • Vercel / Netlify: Simplest deployment for Next.js/Nuxt projects. Built-in CI/CD.
  • AWS / GCP / Azure: Full control, but more operational overhead.
  • Docker + Kubernetes: For teams needing maximum portability and multi-cloud strategies.

Anti-Patterns to Avoid

  • Resume-Driven Development: Choosing technologies to pad resumes rather than solve the problem.
  • Over-Engineering: A blog does not need Kubernetes. A landing page does not need a microservices architecture.
  • Ignoring Maintenance Cost: The cost of a technology is not the initial development—it is 5 years of maintenance.
